SEW ME TOGETHER

 
What began with an impetus to create work for a group show with loose themes about islands, eyes, and mermaids turned into an exploration about my own vulnerabilities around being seen. As my work often begins with the materials around me, this series was no different. The idea for this exhibition unfolded around the start of the year as I was reviewing my astrological chart. For the first time, I noticed a symbol that peaked my curiosity. This prompted a deep look at where I would find grace on my life’s journey. The standout message was for me to communicate from my heart.  With an immediate intuitive spark and some leftover thread nearby, I began sewing words into a piece of transparent paper that I had painted over years ago. Cursive letters, one attached to the next, softly forming a buried wish. I dug around my bins to find more transparent scraps to hold all the words that kept coming. Papers and thoughts that I had saved over the years surfaced to reveal truths that I had only alluded to in my abstract work. These pieces took shape like slow journal entries with a highlighter to the juiciest bits.  Spiritual questions and truths that circle my mind and now have a place to land and be seen.
